THE ESSENCE OF GOOD FOOD

Food is the fuel for our body's survival. Selecting a well-balanced nutritious food has a positive effect on the final outcome of the quality of your life. Being underweight or overweight can create serious health problems. Obese people are more prone to diabetes, high blood pressure and heart problems. Being underweight reduces your resistance to disease germs and you are always tired and listless.

Food affects every organ of our body, including the heart, lungs, and brain. The correct diet will produce fitness and energy, nourish nerves, feed muscles, improve circulation and breathing, and support our immune system. It will promote a positive sense of well being.

The eating process itself can create a feeling of wellbeing.

Here is a list of food items that you have to control/avoid:

Fat: Only 30% of daily calorie intake should come from fat. Fat are of two types:
      1. Saturated Fats: Dairy products, palm oil, coconut oil, hard margarines sauces and biscuits etc. Eating too much of these will raise our cholesterol levels and also lead to obesity, heart disease, strokes and cardiac arrest.
      2. Unsaturated Fats: Sunflower, corn and soya oil, nuts and soft margarines. These fats are not as dangerous as the saturated ones and are considered good fats that help to restore everyday wear and tear.
Salt: High salt intake produces same effects like stress in our body: Induce high blood pressure, irritate the menstrual cycle and have a stimulating and weakening effect on our adrenal glands, muscles and nervous system.
Sugar: Sugar induces a short-term boost of energy, but if taken in large quantities, overload our endocrine glands including the pancreas and adrenal glands. These induce diabetes in later life when the insulin produced can no longer cope with the high sugar levels. Obesity, tooth decay and mood swings also occur.
Caffeine, alcohol, food additives all should be carefully regarded

Some Basic Food Principles:

Eat at regular timings
Eat slowly, take time to chew the food well
Avoid too much of fried food
Avoid aerated sweet drinks
Drink 8-10 glasses of water daily (if you are working in humid hot conditions, this should quadruple!)
Do not overload your systems
Select a menu which should include proteins (10-20% calorie intake), Fats (30% of calorie), Carbohydrate (50-60% of Calorie intake), fresh vegetables and fruits to supply sufficient amounts of vitamins and minerals.
Avoid too much of processed and overcooked food.
Finally, avoid eating too much when you are not relaxed or under tension: the digestive system will not be working properly. But going without food during this period is also not advisable: danger of peptic ulceration and gastritis is there.
